The Kotel people are known to be industrious, enterprising and studious. In earlier days, they maintained the town's 5 secular schools on donations of their own. Masters of construction, they built clapboard houses with woodcut doors and carved ceiling soffits. The women added homespun broadloom carpets, fluffy rugs and cushions to the beauty and warmth of their homes.
