Monument to Bulgaria's the self-studied master of genius craftsman master Kolyu Ficheto, 1800-1881. The town of Dryanovo is his birthplace. Ficheto built numerous buildings, bridges, churches, houses and belfries. Church building seems to have been the master's greatest fascination. The churches he constructed were most numerous in the town of Veliko Turnovo in northern Bulgaria – St. Nicola, St. Virgin Mary, St. Spas, St. Marina, St. Cyril and Methodius, and the original church with revolving columns in the hall St. Konstantin and Elena.
The public buildings erected by the master are also valuable and impressive. Included among them are the colonnade inn – Hadji Nicola's Han and the Turkish town hall (konak) in Veliko Turnovo.
In 1994, the Bulgarian National Bank issued banknotes of 2,000 leva featuring a portrait of Ficheto. The full-faced portrait was based on Boris Denev's painting of the master. His works -- the inn Nikoli Han and the belfry of St. Konstantin and Elena in Veliko Turnovo -- were featured in the background. The reverse of the note depicted the south face of the Holy Trinity orthodox church in Svishtov (1865-1867), the layout of the church, and the bridge over the Yantra river near the town of Byala. |
