The Kolyu Ficheto masterpiece bridge at Byala. The arches of the bridge, eight in all, of which five have survived, were built without anything to hold the stones together. The stones themselves were chiseled so that they locked one another and made the arch sturdy yet flexible.
When the local Turkish governor heard of that upon completion of the bridge, he demanded that Master Kolyu prove that the bridge would not collapse. The builder asked for one day to prepare his proof. |
