One of Bulgaria's ancient cities, today's municipality of Lovetch began as a fortress
in the Middle Ages. At the end of the 11th century,
it was known as Lovyts (meaning
a town of hunters).
Lovetch is on the Osam river about
128 kilometers north and east of Sofia, where the Danubian plain meets with the northernmost uplands of Stara Planina mountain. There was an old covered wooden bridge over the Osum River but the river carried it away in 1872. Only 2 years after that the self-studied master of genius craftsman master Kolyu Ficheto built up his famous covered bridge with 24 small workshops in it. Unfortunately it was destroyed by fire in 1925. The present covered bridge was built up on the analogy of it.
Lovetch is well known for its leather products, such as leather clothes. With 60,000 citizens, Lovetch is situated in the northern-central part of Bulgaria. There is a bicycle factory, a plant for electric motors, a factory for fruit juices, banks, movie theaters, small shops for souvenirs, colleges, a technical high school, a language high school, bible school etc. At one time (during the 1930's-40's) Lovetch was an important Bulgarian aircraft manufacturing center.
In several large caves around Lovetch numerous remains from the Old Stone, New Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages are to be found.
Lovetch is also known as the place where the first Bulgarian astronaut,
Georgy Ivanov,
was born.
