Once again we take a photo journey into the Iskar river gorge and find Svoge - the town of chocolate. These photos were taken in early September, 2005 - following heavy rains.

Almost half of Bulgaria was under water. For three days, some regions were drenched in as much rainfall as they would normally receive in five or six months. The storms left ten dead and thousands homeless.

Tens of villages and towns were cut off from the rest of the world. Military vehicles battled impassable roads to bring food and water to the worst-affected areas. 10,000 people were evacuated. At least 300 million euros will be needed to restore the damages. However, this money will not cover the losses of those whose homes and household possessions have been destroyed.

Nobody knows how much money will be necessary to prevent the spread of diseases in the zones submerged in mud and water. Therefore any aid is more than welcome. See "Flood in Bulgaria" and help if you can.
