Stuck to the Opera building is the house of one of the oldest Bulgarian political parties - the Bulgarian People's Agrarian Union. And the monument of its most famous leader, ex prime minister Alexander Stamboliyski in front. Actually this neighbourhood is not so strange. In the times where the party was in power Stambolyisly ordered to one of the famous Bulgarian architects to design this big house for their needs. But some political disorders followed, in 1923 Stamboliyski was killed, the agrarian party was out, later the party became the only other party than the communists allowed after 1944, but they obviously thought that agrarians don't deserve such enormous headquarters and the bigger part of the building was re-designed to be the opera that we see today.
