The other side of the basilica looks out on the Alexander Nevski square. Here is the monument of the unknown warrior with the eternal flame.
The monument was made in 1981, and at that time there was a kind of a competition for the inscription on it, people were encouraged to send proposals for it. The competition won, 60 years after his death, Ivan Vazov with his verses from the poem The new Cemetery near Slivnitsa.
