Zlatograd is only 3 km (1.8 miles) from the Bulgaria-Greece border, situated along the Varbitza River between the East and West ranges of the Rhodope mountains. Zlato is the Bulgarian word for gold. Although Zlatograd is a very old town, it has borne its name only since 1934. People say the name was given because of the golden colour of the tobacco leaves grown in this part of the Rhodopi.

Take special note as you view these photos of the unique round chimneys on some houses. Such chimneys will be seen no other place in Bulgaria - only in Zlatograd.

Zlatograd is the birth place of the legendary leader Deljo haidutin, for whom is written the song performed by Valja Balkanska which was sent into space aboard the spacecraft Voyager in 1977. See our Bulgarian music page for more details.

You will want to include a visit to Zlatograd because of its architecture reserve and its unique ethnographic regional complex. The latter is not just a museum, but throughout the year all activities connected with the primary processing of wool, fur and cotton are demonstrated in authentic conditions, and demonstrations of spinning, knitting and weaving are performed.
